Blackmagic Design today announced that Shanghai based Huangyi Photography and Videography Services used ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K to live produce Beijing Hyundai’s Lingdong launch event at the Shanghai Expo Center.
Huangyi provided the live feed of the event for China’s top video sites, including LeTV, Tencent Video, iQiyi and Youku. LeTV also live VR streamed the event using an 4K EFP system built with a variety of Blackmagic Design’s Ultra HD products, including ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K, Teranex Express and HyperDeck Studio Pro.
Beijing Hyundai, an automobile manufacturing company headquartered in Beijing and a joint-venture between Beijing Automotive Group and Hyundai Motor Company, attached great importance to the Elantra Lingdong, its strategic model specifically developed for the Chinese market and all major auto media outlets were present. At the one hour launch event, some of the highest level executives from Beijing Hyundai and Hyundai Motor gave presentations to the audience and unveiled the new car together with its celebrity spokesperson, Hu Ge. As the presentations by the executives and art performance shows happened, live video from cameras, pre recorded videos, dazzling computer generated graphics or slides were displayed on the background video wall to enhance the presentations and performances.
According to Xueqing Wang, technical director for the launch event, the ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K managed all the live feeds from eight cameras, including four set up in front of the stage, two mounted on jibs on either side of the stage, a roaming camera and a Steadicam. The four fixed cameras and the roaming camera were connected via SDI to the ATEM switcher, while the two on jibs were connected via wireless transmitters.
The program output from the ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K was sent to a different switcher, which mixed the program with pre recorded presentation slides, computer graphics and clips and then sent it to the video wall on the stage. An aux output was sent to a Blackmagic Mini Converter SDI Distribution 4K, which distributed the signal to the webcast systems of LeTV, Tencent Video, iQiyi and Youku.
“The ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K has the reliability required for serious live production. It ran some ten hours without stop every day two days straight for rehearsal but it appeared to feel no pressure at all and when the show was on, it worked without a glitch,” said Wang. “The ATEM switcher is also easy to use with all its features at my fingertip, so the operator doesn’t have to scour the menus for some feature.”
He noted that the audio mixing capabilities of the ATEM switcher were helpful in the live production. “The audio signal going to the ATEM from the external mixer could be embedded in the SDI outputs, eliminating the need for external audio embedding devices.”
A 4K EFP system built purely with Blackmagic Ultra HD products was also used by LeTV for its live VR streaming of the event. Eight camera feeds from a VR rig went into a stitching station equipped with a DeckLink SDI 4K, which was used to output the stitched 360 VR 4K video.
To send the 360 video over a long distance from the rig to an ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K switcher, they relied on a pair of Mini Converter Optical Fiber 4Ks to handle conversions between SDI and optical fiber. After overlaying LeTV’s logo at the ATEM switcher, the 360 video was then sent to a Teranex Express standards processor, which downconverted the 4K signal to HD for LeTV’s streaming system to push it to the Internet. A 4K signal from the ATEM switcher was also recoded by a HyperDeck Studio Pro SSD recorder for future use.
